Advent 2019

Advent 2019: 5 services, 5 ways to prepare

With the Christmas season hurtling towards us like a runaway juggernaut, it’s important to step back and think for a while about the meaning of the season. Advent (meaning ‘coming’ in Latin) describes the period in the Christian calendar where congregations prepare for Christmas day and the celebrations of the birth of Jesus Christ.

Historically this has been done in many ways from fasting from rich foods to singing particular hymns and the lighting of Advent candles. By far the most well-known custom is the Advent calendar, counting down each day to Christmas with foil-wrapped chocolate treats behind each window. Plenty is done to mark this important season, yet often our main memory of last year was the fun but frenzied rush to get prepared with presents, food, parties and feasts.

This year why not create the time to join us over our five Advent services to get fully prepared? Five services that offer space and precious moments to slow down and look up. Moments to pray, to hear afresh Old and New Testament voices calling us to prepare for the coming of the King and his kingdom, to ready ourselves spiritually for the celebrations of Christmas.

Join us 11.00am and 6.30pm for our Advent services, Sundays 1st to 15th December 2019.
