Know Your Church Know Your Neighbourhood

On 1st June 2017, Holy Trinity’s Parish was enlarged to encompass most of the previous St Barnabas & St Jude Parish. Because of our new responsibility for this area and the rapid changes the area was experiencing, we partnered with Together Newcastle and the Church Urban Fund (CUF) in a facilitated process called Know Your Church Know Your Neighbourhood.

This process is designed to help churches think about themselves in relation to the wider community they seek to serve, and make prayerful and informed decisions about their mission in their locality.

It takes a small group of church members and gives them the tools to reflect on how their church is seen by others, to listen to the wider community, celebrate strengths and have a deeper understanding of its needs. Sharing back their findings with the wider congregation, the church is then able to make prayerful and intentional decisions about how it wants to respond.

The process is tailored to the needs of the church and the neighbourhood, and consists of at least five sessions lasting two hours over a six-month period, with some tasks for the group to do in between. The group at Holy Trinity Church was facilitated by Steve Forster from CUF.

The following three pages outline some of the processes involved and the data collected, along with summaries of the meetings. However, the final report and recommendations of the group can be accessed here
